In 1983, during the preliminary 12-Metre defender trials, Courageous, attempting a record 3rd defence of the America’s Cup (also defended in 1974 and 1977), was defeated by Defender. However, in the end it was Liberty and not Defender that was selected to become the last Defender of the New York Yacht Club for the America’s Cup, which she historically lost to Australia II in 1983.
