“On this day” in 1899...

Columbia was selected by the New York Yacht Club to defend the Cup. The yacht was bankrolled by American banker JP Morgan and the design and construction was done by Capt Nathaniel Herreshoff. Columbia became the first yacht to be selected to defend the America’s Cup twice (1899 and 1901). This famous yacht was under the command of Captain Charles “Charlie” Barr, who was born and bred in Scotland. He came to America as part of the crew of a racing yacht captained by his elder Brother John Barr and after a series of commands he made his reputation as a fearsome racing skipper giving no quarter to his opponents. He knew the rules intimately and used them to every advantage. Barr remains an America’s Cup legend for his adopted country, he and Columbia soundly defeated Shamrock, Sir Thomas Lipton’s first challenge, in three straight races.
