“On this day” in 1899

Shamrock, the first of five yachts built by Scotsman Sir Thomas Lipton to challenge for the America’s Cup between 1899 and 1930, arrived in New York to compete in his first challenge. This was the first yacht to be given special permission by the New York Yacht Club to be towed across the Atlantic to compete. The previous rule being to sail to the match venue on their own hull.
