Brad Butterworth, Alinghi Vice-President and esteemed tactician, was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) after New Zealand won the Cup in 1995. No other afterguard member has won so many races in succession and he was elected to the America’s Cup Hall of Fame in 2004 for his remarkable record.

“On this day” in 1851...

Six days after winning the ₤100.00 Cup that now bears her name, America defeated the yacht Titania in a wager race with Titania’s owner Robert Stephenson for ₤50.00 for each of two legs, before being sold by her American owners two days later. Stephenson (1803-1859) was world famous for his railway and engineering projects.
