After losing only four of more than 40 defender trials, Dennis Connor’s Freedom was selected to defend the America’s Cup. It was the 23rd and last successful defense by the New York Yacht Club. Connor was criticised at the time by other Defender syndicates for increasing the costs to participate by preparing a season before the Cup races
