in 1992 America³ defeated Il Moro di Venezia by 1:58 in the third race of the 28th America’s Cup to go 2-1 in the series. The match was the first for an Italian yacht. On board Il Moro di Venezia in 1992 were Alinghi’s Francesco Rapetti (“Cicco”) and Lorenzo Mazza. During the race an ESPN diver filming the yachts rounding the mark at water level drifted into the path of the competing yachts which had to avoid running him down at 12 knots.
