… in 1977, during the Defender observation trials, Enterprise, a new 12-Metre designed by Sparkman & Stephens defeated Courageous in two races. Enterprise sported revolutionary Mylar-laminated sails which became known as “garbage bag” sails for their green colour. Enterprise was ultimately excused and Courageous with Ted Turner at the helm was selected to defend the America’s Cup in 1977 against Australia.
