… in 1974, during the Defender observation trials, the 12-Metre Courageous defeated Valiant by 3 minutes and 14 seconds. Valiant had been built to defend the America’s Cup in 1970 and was a rare design disaster for Olin Stephens, the most successful America’s Cup designer ever. She was one of the heaviest 12-Ms ever built, but is still sailing on the East Coast of the United States. © Hamish Ross
